Climate change is above the perception threshold
Of its 244,075 reports broadcast since 2013, even FOX devoted 2.4 percent to climate change – and thus not only exceeded the threshold of perception but gave this topic twice as much space as the catastrophic state of the American education system. CBS may go down in history as a “climate channel” – hardly any other topic has received as much attention from the editorial team. Both broadcasters agree that things have not changed for the better during any of the last three administrations. The current cartoons on hurricane coverage illustrate the result by showing Donald Trump claiming that with him as president, there would be no hurricanes to complain about.
The effects of climate change have been affecting more and more countries for decades – so it would be interesting to learn about the different measures that have been and are being introduced by decision-makers on the various continents. But both networks seem to see the rather extensive reporting on climate change as almost separate from climate change prevention measures, for which – with some limitations – national governments are also responsible. Both broadcasters provide very little information on how the candidates in the race for the White House are positioning themselves.
